Doctor Giorgos Karagiannis is a graduate of the medical school at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic.
After graduation, Doctor Giorgos Karagiannis trained for six years in general surgery at the General Hospital of Limassol and the General Hospital of Nicosia. Along with his training, he earned a Master's degree in Hepatobiliary Surgery from Democritus University. He also received training in laparoscopic surgery in Athens and participated in a colorectal surgery masterclass in Qatar.
Upon successfully completing his general surgery training, Doctor Giorgos Karagiannis developed a special interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Consequently, he applied for and was accepted as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal and General Surgery at the Royal Free NHS Trust in London. During this time, he participated in numerous complex cases of large bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases, treated either with endoscopy or laparoscopic surgery. He also performed emergency surgical procedures such as bowel resections and stoma formations, splenectomies, laparoscopic appendectomies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, as well as elective general surgery procedures like laparoscopic hernia repairs and hemorrhoid treatments. In addition, he was a member of a multidisciplinary team comprising colorectal surgeons, oncologists, histopathologists, and radiologists, treating complex oncological patients. Among his other duties at the Royal Free NHS Trust was training junior doctors.
He also regularly attends conferences and other CME events to maintain a broad interest, where he presents rare cases and their successful surgical management.
He is a member of the General Medical Council, American College of Surgeons, Cyprus Medical Association, European Association of Endoscopic Surgery, European Society of Coloproctology.
He is also a Scientific Collaborator at the European University of Cyprus, where he teaches at the medical school. The doctor works in the private sector and is registered in the GESY system.
